At the Department of Mechanical Engineering, lectures and exercises are held on Hongo Campus from the 2nd year A semester in order to provide practical education at an early stage.

From the 2nd Year A Semester (A1A2 Term)

Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering
The students study the basic subjects of mechanical engineering, with mathematics and the four dynamics (thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanics of materials, and mechanics of machines) as the pillars.

3rd Year

Applications of Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
Comprehensive Exercise in Mechanical Engineering I
  • Mechanical Engineering
Comprehensive Exercise in Mechanical Engineering I
Each student will be given a laptop computer, and practical manufacturing exercises will begin, including Stirling engine design and fabrication exercises, software exercises, mechatronics exercises, and digital engineering exercises. In addition, an active learning classroom has been established in 2019 to encourage active discussions among students and focus on the development of communication and leadership skills.

3rd Year Summer

  • Industrial Training
    (Short-term internship)
With the support of the department, we offer a 2-week short-term internship program for students to get acquainted with the industrial scene. For nearly 60 years, this program has been offered as a departmental exercise in mechanical engineering (not an internship) to deepen students' understanding of the realities of industry through "work experience at a company" during the summer vacation of their third-year. Every year, more than 50 companies involved in manufacturing accept students from the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Although it is an elective course, it is a popular course with nearly 100 applicants every year, and although the practical training is short (about 2 weeks), the content is substantial. The industrial training experience gives students a sense of "what it means to work" and "how what they are learning at the university is useful in concrete terms". In addition to earning credits, this is a very popular training program for third-year students, as it provides valuable experience that cannot be obtained on campus.
List of Companies Visited in the Past
IHI (Mizuho Works), Isuzu (Fujisawa Plant), JFE Steel (East Japan Works), JAXA (Tsukuba Space Center), Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (Yokosuka area), Toshiba (Keihin Works), Nissan Motor (Atsugi Technical Center), Japan Airlines (Haneda Maintenance Center), Hitachi Construction Machinery (Tsuchiura Works), Hitachi, Ltd. Hitachi, Ltd. (Central Research Laboratory), DMG Mori Seiki (Tokyo Headquarters), etc.

3rd Year A Semester

  • Creative Exercise Design
Lectures, internships, and other events are held to allow students to experience laboratory research. Advanced and specialized lectures on mechanical engineering and exercises to foster creativity for manufacturing are also provided.

4th Year

Upon promotion to the next level, students are assigned to a laboratory and begin their graduation thesis, where they develop their problem-solving skills through advanced research.
  • Factory Tour
As one of the exercises, students will visit and observe factories, offices, laboratories, and other sites of various companies in the suburbs of Tokyo. This is a great opportunity for students to experience the relevance of mechanical engineering to the real world and to learn about cutting-edge engineering technology and its position in the world. It is also an excellent opportunity to learn about the specific work and career paths of senior students who are active in the field, which will surely increase their motivation for learning after the visit. Not only 3rd year students who are taking the seminar but also 2nd year students are welcome to participate.
